Why West Kootenays?

Come and enjoy an amazing outdoor lifestyle, in a great community, with fantastic colleagues, working a full scope of practice.

We guarantee you'll find the sweet life in West Kootenay.

We, the medical staff of the Kootenay Boundary, would like to welcome you to the region we call home. Come on in. Have a look around. Get to know our communities, our practices, our lifestyle.
Picture
Our region, the West Kootenay, is in the south-eastern part of British Columbia, along the US border with Washington and Idaho.

Off the beaten track, you might say. Which is just how we like it. When you come to West Kootenay you can expect to leave some things behind. Crowds, for one. Even on a bluebird powder day at RED Mountain, or Whitewater Resort, we don’t wait in line much. And we can always find a parking spot.

Here there's space for you. (And we really mean that, population density in the West Kootenays is 3 people per square kilometer.) We don’t do long commutes. We don’t wait in traffic. We know our neighbours. And housing is still relatively affordable here compared to many parts of the province.

But don’t worry. There’s plenty you won’t have to leave behind. All the amenities you need (including lightning fast internet) and the good food and great coffee you want. Tucked away restaurants, charming shops, locally-owned grocery stores stocked with wholesome foods. Quality schools with options for private, alternative, French, Waldorf or home-schooling. Sports and activities for the kids. Burgeoning economies with career opportunities for your spouse.

It’s true we’re a long way from major city centers – 300km from Spokane, 600 from Vancouver or Calgary. We’ve come to see that distance as an advantage. We like to think we’re just far enough away. (And with multiple daily flights to Vancouver and Calgary, we know we can get back whenever we want.)

First Nations people from the Ktunaxa, Secwepemc, Sinixt and Syilx Nations have lived in, traveled through, and utilized the land known as Kootenay Boundary for millennia. Each valley and community is shaped by history, people and landscape; by lakes, rivers and creeks; by ranch land, farmland or orchards.

Whether you prefer your mountain terrain to be measured by vertical drop and number of black diamond descents, whether on skis, board, or bike, there’s more than enough choice for you here. Find a community that’s just right for you. The perfect reflection of how you think life should be.

But how will you decide?

West Kootenay REGION:
A little bit about our communities -
How would you like to start your day?

With so many great communities to choose from, how do you pick a home base?

You could choose by landscape, recreation or culture. Do you want to live in a heritage house or on a hobby farm? Lakeside or riverfront? Ferry access or ski in and out?

Have you always wanted to keep goats? Chickens? Horses? Alpacas? Would you rather harvest, hunt or fish for your dinner? (Or, would you prefer it delivered, hot, fresh and ready to eat, thank you very much.) How would you like to start your day? A cold dip in a creek, or a lane swim at the aquatic center. A strong espresso in a coffee shop or your own home brew on the deck, on the dock, or in the car on your way back from the trails.

It’s all possible here. Each of our communities offers unique advantages.

If you want a small city with strong employers, sports and community infrastructure, check out Trail.
If you’re after acres of stunning farm and ranch land, look to Boundary Country. If your idea of fun is
a big serving elevation and adventure with sides of brick storefronts and tech start ups, look no further
than Rossland.  If it’s lake life you’re after, explore Nelson for a small town arts vibe. Or look to Kaslo,
Nakusp, New Denver or Slocan for dramatic mountain landscapes, each with its own distinct village.
Your search for laid-back cabin and boating life will bring you to Christina Lake.

Welcome to the West Kootenay, where our communities have everything to offer.

The question is, what are you looking for?

FRUITVALE:  CLOSE-KNIT COMMUNITY WITH ROOM TO ROAM

A short drive south-east of Trail, Fruitvale is an unassuming small town that is big on community spirit. The kind of place you could buy a few acres, plant a large garden, some fruit trees, have a horse and some chickens, and heck, throw in a goat or two.

Fruitvale is known for its plentiful trout fishing and local Nitehawks hockey club, which has produced more than its share of NHL players. The Beaver Valley Medical Clinic, where 6 family physicians work in tandem with allied health professionals, is located within the walkable downtown core, along with the bank, elementary school, post office, coffee and gift shops.

Six minutes away, downtown Rossland’s pocket-sized charm turns into a whopping, oversized adventure. RED Mountain Resort has 300 inches of annual snowfall, 3000 feet of vertical drop, and a ski and snowboard school for all ages and abilities.

Summer and fall, local powderhounds turn to hiking, trail running and mountain biking for fun and adventure. With over 200km of professionally-maintained single track trails, and the only IMBA-certified Epic Trail in the country, Rossland is called the mountain bike capital of Canada for a reason. And if you like your adventures a little lower adrenaline, there is hiking along the breathtaking Seven Summits Trail, or golf at Redstone Resort, or a latte and chat at the Alpine Grind.

ROSSLAND:  STOREFRONTS, START-UPS AND BIG ADVENTURE

Less than a 15 minute drive from Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, the village of Rossland may seem quaint at first glance. With its main street dotted with heritage brick buildings, charming shops, cafes and restaurants, it would be understandable if you thought of it as a nice place to spend an afternoon.

Rossland is that, and so much more. In fact, one of those storefronts is an innovative tech start up, which helps organizations consult, discuss and solve complex problems. (You’ll find it right next to the local chocolate shop, across from the independent grocery store, and just down the street from the recently renovated community library.)
